Fountain Square, Cranleigh, Surrey
We worked with Surrey County Council and Create Streets on improvements to Fountain Square, Cranleigh. Cranleigh is a traditional village in rural Surrey and Fountain Square is part of its vibrant village centre, accommodating cafes and pubs with spill-out space, a small supermarket, blue badge parking, community planting, a bus stop and with close proximity to a school. The council’s focus was on fully realising the value of this already well-used and bustling space for the community, with our brief focused on highway redesign and public realm improvements.
Our approach to this project was guided by healthy streets principles that promote accessibility and challenge car dominance. Our design added continuous footways at junctions constructed from block paving rather than asphalt, which are an effective traffic calming measure.
From a technical perspective, Lewis Hubbard Engineering provided a full civil engineering design pack including pavement constructions, levels, road signs and markings, sustainable drainage, utilities coordination and vehicle tracking. We also prepared designers’ responses to stage 1 and stage 2 road safety audits.
