Gascoigne Road, Barking

Aiming to draw together several strands of investment across the Gascoigne Estate, Be First commissioned Periscope and Lewis Hubbard Engineering to consider complementary improvements to Gascoigne Road.

We found an outdated highway design and traffic calming features that characterise Gascoigne Road, jarring against the diverse needs of the local community and the forthcoming development. Narrow footways became congested at school and nursery drop-off times, while cars sped through traffic calming features in a race to avoid giving way.

Together with the local community, we developed proposals that re-balance the street’s character to better suit their needs, introducing pocket parks, wider footways and easier pedestrian crossings. Our proposals also won grant funding from Thames Water to install a series of rain gardens and support from TfL to prepare Gascoigne Road for forthcoming bus service improvements.
